"Living the Dream, Planning for the Future" became the catch phrase for Highland Alpaca early on. As two teachers with over sixty years between them in public education, Fay and Jenny were excited with the idea that retirement would mean developing a business based on beautiful animals and the products they provide.
Owning a small business had been an idea that intrigued Fay for several years. After a teaching career that involved coaching, athletic administration, and service on the local Special Olympics Board of Directors, she was ready for a new challenge that would be less structured and more self-determined. "Walking out the backdoor and down to the barn is my morning 'commute' and I get lots of 'overtime' advantages, like watching alpacas run in the evening!" smiles Fay. "This is a great way to enjoy each day and know the next day will be another step toward a bright future."
Jenny is the heart and soul of the wonderful daily care that alpacas on the farm receive. As a native of Scotland with a teaching career that spans three continents, she has followed a non-traditional path since her teens. A long time love of animals made the decision to turn her original four acre country home into an alpaca farm very easy. "I spent two days at a show totally immersed in the spirit and gentleness of alpacas. There was no doubt in my mind that they were going to be part of my future. Now, with the new farm, beautiful home, and full days of alpacas, I am absolutely 'living a dream'".
With the move to a larger eighteen acre farm and becoming full time alpaca owners, Fay and Jen have expanded their operations to include boarding, birthing services, halter training, and transporting to shows. See Farm Services for more information.
